Our History
Lamplas Ltd, officially registered as Lam-Plas (Durham) Limited, is a UK-based company specializing in glassfibre (GRP) and solid surface mouldings. Established on December 16, 1970, the company has evolved significantly over the decades.
Early Years and Expansion
Lamplas commenced operations in Clara Vale in 1970, initially focusing on manufacturing motorbike fairings and helmet boxes. Recognizing a market opportunity, the company expanded its product line in 1972 to include gas bottle covers for the UK touring caravan market. This diversification led to a relocation to High Spen, where they operated from the old Co-op buildings on Collingdon Road. Continued growth necessitated additional facilities on Ramsay Street for finishing, dispatch, and head office functions, as well as a pattern and mould department on Glossop Street.
Relocation and Diversification
In 1995, to accommodate increasing demand in the leisure industry, particularly for caravan and motorhome components, Lamplas moved to a larger facility in Leadgate, acquiring a former factory on Pont Lane with 55,000 sq ft of production space. By 1998, supplying over 60% of the caravan and motorhome market, the company expanded further by establishing a second factory in Castleside for larger components. In 2005, Lamplas diversified into solid surface casting, producing worktops, door surrounds, and wash basins for a major UK bathroom furniture manufacturer.
Recent Developments
The company’s growth continued with the acquisition of an adjacent factory in 2008, consolidating operations and increasing total production space to 70,000 sq ft. In 2009, Lamplas expanded its product range to include bathroom basins and freestanding baths, catering to both domestic and commercial markets, including housing, hotels, student accommodations, the NHS, and the prison service.
Current Operations
Today, Lamplas operates from the Castleside Industrial Estate in Consett, County Durham, employing approximately 80 staff. The company continues to innovate, offering a comprehensive range of GRP and solid surface products, and maintains a strong presence in the leisure industry while exploring new markets.
